Otay customers can take advantage of an increased rebate on the purchase of high-efficiency clothes washers (HEWs) beginning March 15, 2010. The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) increased the current rebate for HEWs from $100.00 to $150.00 for approved models with a grant from the state Department of Water Resources. The Otay Water District adds another $25.00 bringing the total rebate to $175.00.
The additional financial incentive is designed to encourage customers to purchase a high-efficiency clothes washer instead of a less efficient conventional top-loading model. HEWs use 65 percent less water and 55 percent less energy. For a typical family of four, a HEW can save 9,000 gallons of water per year compared to standard top-load washers. In addition, they clean better, use less detergent, are gentler on clothes and reduce drying time significantly saving energy. A list of eligible HEWs is available at:
