LOCAL WATER AGENCIES RECOGNIZING WATER-WISE LANDSCAPES

03/11/2010

SPRING VALLEY, CA – As water is Southern California’s most precious resource, local water agencies are encouraging customers to employ the latest water-wise landscaping techniques in an effort to conserve water. After years of implementing successful water conservation programs for inside the home, water agencies are taking conservation incentive programs outside and recognizing residential and commercial water-wise landscapes. The 2010 California Friendly Landscape Contest, sponsored by the Otay Water District, the City of San Diego, Helix Water District and the Sweetwater Authority, recognizes residential and commercial gardens and landscapes for their drought tolerance and attractiveness.

“Our four agencies are looking for the most colorful and attractive established ‘California Friendly’ or water-wise landscapes,” said Mark Watton, Otay Water District General Manager. The vegetation of a “California Friendly” landscape typically needs half as much water as a conventional landscape. “Drought tolerant landscapes are a beautiful alternative to traditional landscaping while saving a tremendous amount of water and money,” added Watton.

To download a contest application go to www.landscapecontest.com and submit by April 12, 2010. “Best-in-District” winners from each agency will be awarded $250 and will be recognized at a ceremony at the Water Conservation Garden on May 8, 2010, as well as featured on the landscape contest web site.
